What is involved in making a real fur hat?
First you have to decide what animal you are going to make the hat out of...
The most common choices are raccoon, beaver & coyote;
but you can use any type of fur or wool bearing animal you have access to.
On this page you will see how we construct the standard 'pill box' pattern Danial Boone hat.

Wether you tan your own skins or purchase already tanned pelts; the next step is to choose your lining material and cut out your pattern. When purchasing hides; it is preferable that you obtain garment quality dry tanned skins.
It can take more than one animal to make a quality hat; Using the thickest and best colored fur sections. We sew our patterns together with a Bonis fur machine. It is a very time consuming process to cut and sew the pieces together so the hair goes in one direction.
After the fur shell is finished the tail is added and a piece of lining is sewn around the entire edge.
The lining is assembled separately to fit inside the fur shell and hand stitched to the trim piece that has been machine sewn to the fur.
We add our label to the lining and your coonskin hat is complete.
In some of the above photos you see we have dyed the skins. This is done to create a full, deep look to the pelt. This way wherever the hair is thinner or it separates you will not see any bright colored skin underneath. This is an especially desirable feature if you are making garments. To see our coloring formulas check the bottom of our 'HOW TO PAGE'.
